Mustang McGee playing double bass on stage with yellow lighting

It all started in Memphis….

My name is Will McGee, but my friends call me Mustang. I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, where my journey as a bass player and aspiring songwriter began. Immersed in the rich musical history of my hometown, I fell in love with the sounds of Southern Soul and Southern Rock. With legends like Al Green and the Allman Brothers echoing in my mind, I carried their influence when I moved to Nashville in 2012 to study music at Belmont University.

In Nashville, I formed Forest Fire Gospel Choir, a young band that somewhat married the soulful grit of The Band with the raw energy of Kings of Leon. During this time, I honed my songwriting craft, played live gigs, and soaked up as much studio experience as I could. By 2021, I found myself falling into honky-tonk country and improvisational jam music when I joined forces with Daniel Donato to form Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country. Over the past four years and nearly 400 shows, we’ve brought our “cosmic” sound to audiences from coast to coast.

In October 2024, I released my first solo work, the Cosmic Collaborations: “Ten Feet of Rope” and “Free Wheelin’.” Recorded quickly at Nashville’s Welcome to 1979 studio, these tracks capture the raw, live energy of Cosmic Country and showcase its signature swinging sound.

Looking ahead to 2025, I’ll be releasing my debut full-length album, “Horseplay.” Recorded at the legendary Royal Studios in Memphis with producer Boo Mitchell, the album channels the soulful essence of the space that brought Al Green’s classics to life. The record is a fiery, romantic collection of songs that reflect years of creative growth. Featuring singles like “Where You Found Me” and “For a Long Time,” the album spans psychedelic folk, Southern rock, soulful ballads, and quirky pop, blending vintage vibes with timeless grooves.

From the beginning, my goal has been to create music that connects deeply with people who love the feel of classic sounds and authentic storytelling. I’m excited to take these songs on the road and share them live. Saddle up and gallop with me!
